Defect Localization Inside Simulated MV Switchgear Based on Cumulative Energy Curve Using Transient Earth Voltage Sensors

The partial discharge (PD) leads to catastrophic failure of the medium voltage (MV) switchgear insulation. Determination PD source (defect) location in high (HV) equipment is very important maintenance procedures and isolating root cause generation. In this paper, transient earth (TEV) detection method was used acquire defect-initiated signals a simulated MV model. An array four TEV sensors were placed on surface walls outside an tank generated from known location(s)/coordinates sharp needle type defect inside tank. time difference arrival (TDOA) between that are captured by critically analyzed. Estimating TDOA at with accuracy great importance for accurate localization. cumulative energy (CEM) estimate onset point each signal. estimated compared actual expected based coordinates sensors. Experimental data as basis determining results show average error about 1.34 ns, which equivalent propagation distance 0.4 m.
